Scotland and The North

On our 2013 trip we zigzag from Edinburgh across the Lake District, then continue on to Manchester.  It might not seem like it, but there's a lot of variety in that itinerary.

Edinburgh (UK)

    Edinburgh

The capital of Scotland since the 14th century, Edinburgh nicely blends history with culture, green spaces, and modern conveniences.

    Edinburgh Castle (UK)

      Edinburgh Castle

Only united with England for just over 300 years, Scotland's history intermingles with that of England, but follows a very different path.  Much of this is explained at Edinburgh Castle.

      Mungrisdale (UK)

        Mungrisdale

We selected Fell Cottage in Mungrisdale as our Lake District hideaway.  Located in the north eastern section of the Lake District, Mungrisdale is awash with footpaths, streams, and fells; a very nice place to get away.

        The Lake District (UK)

Keswick, Windermere, Lakes, and a Train

The Lake District consists of small towns like Keswick (in the north) and Windermere (in the center), and lakes scattered throughout.  The area became popular with literary figures from the 19th century on, with tourism increasing consistently ever since.  One of the highlights of our visit was traveling on the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway.  Having said that, views are spectacular from any mode of transportation.

          Manchester (UK)

            Manchester

Once England's cotton capital and the heart of the industrial revolution, Manchester is still England's 3rd largest city.
