Central America - March 2026

This trip moves from Guatemala’s volcanic basin and colonial streets to Panama’s mix of skyline, forest, and the engineered corridor of the Canal, before ending in El Salvador’s blend of civic landmarks and highland viewpoints. Lake Atitlán, Antigua, and Guatemala City create a sequence of quiet villages, historic architecture, and national symbols, while Panama adds a full Canal transit and a city where tropical greenery sits close to modern towers. El Salvador rounds out the route with the rise of Santa Ana and the formal spaces of San Salvador, linking landscapes, capitals, and coastlines into a single, steady narrative.

Lake Atitlan - Guatemala

    Lake Atitlan

Lake Atitlán is a deep blue basin surrounded by steep volcanic walls and small towns along the shore. Boat travel between San José, San Pedro, and Santiago reveals different angles of the lake’s shifting light and the daily rhythm of each village. The combination of water, mountains, and quiet movement makes the area one of the region’s most photogenic settings.

Antigua and Guatemala City - Guatemala's Capitals

      Antigua and Guatemala City

Antigua serves as Guatemala’s former capital; a role it held until the 1773 earthquake heavily damaged the city and prompted the government to relocate the capital. Its  cobblestones, arches, and pastel facades sit beneath the silhouettes of surrounding volcanoes, giving the town a rhythm that rewards slow exploration. Guatemala City provides a sharper civic counterpoint, anchored by the Palacio Nacional and the Metropolitan Cathedral, two landmarks that define the historic center. Together they show two distinct sides of Guatemala within a short distance of each other.

      Panama Canal

        Panama Canal

A full‑day transit through the Panama Canal offers a close look at one of the world’s most intricate engineering routes. From the deck, ships rise and fall through the locks, passing from the Pacific toward the Caribbean as the landscape shifts from dense green to open water. The slow movement through Miraflores, Pedro Miguel, and Gatún reveals how the canal’s scale and precision shape the entire corridor.

        Panama City

          Panama City

Panama City blends a sharp waterfront skyline with pockets of nature that sit unexpectedly close to the urban core. The Metropolitan Natural Park brings tropical forest into the city itself, and a sloth sighting there adds a quiet, almost surreal pause to the surrounding towers. Casco Viejo’s plazas and restored facades round out the contrast between modern glass and older streets.

San Salvador and the Santa Ana Volcano

            El Salvador

El Salvador blends volcanic scenery with a capital city that feels more approachable than expected. The Santa Ana Volcano provides the country’s standout viewpoint, rising to a turquoise crater lake framed by steep ridges, while San Salvador offers churches, plazas, and civic buildings that anchor the city’s historic core. A word of thanks goes to Gaby of El Salvador Positive Tours, who made the volcano tour truly memorable.
