Saint Petersburg 2015

Here is part 2 of our 2015 European trip.  Given that Russia is the largest country in the world, we feel justified in designing a page just for Saint Petersburg.

Saint Petersburg (RU)

    Saint Petersburg

The most visible symbol of Peter the Great's efforts to modernize Russia in the 18th century, Saint Petersburg is Russia's window to the west.

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood (RU)

Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood

Erected on the site where tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881, construction of the church took almost 25 years.  The remains of many Russian tsars are interned here.  Although large in appearance from the outside, the interior is quite vertical.

      Hermitage (RU)

        Hermitage Museum

The largest museum in the world, the Hermitage traces its history to Catherine the Great.  The museum's collection is said to include over three million pieces.  Although only a small portion are on display, we feel like we saw very single one of them.

        Mariinsky Theatre (RU)

        Mariinsky Theatre

The preeminent ballet venue in the home of that art, the world's greatest performers have entertained at the Mariinsky Theatre since 1860.

        Grand Palace - Peterhof (RU)

          Grand Palace (Peterhof)

More of Peter the Great's legacy, the Palace is well rounded with gardens, fountains, and exhibits within the palace buildings as well.  A wonderful place to visit on a nice day.
