Central Europe 2016

Our tour of seven countries, mainly based in and around Austria.  Trips that cross old Cold War borders are fascinating.  The places listed are in our trip sequence.

Salzburg (AT)

    Salzburg

Although it's an Austrian city, Salzburg has distinctly Bavarian influences.  Much of the city's history, however, including the Festung Hohensalzburg and Mozart, date from the times when Salzburg was a city-state.  Salzburg revels in its ties to The Sound of Music.

    Munich (DE)

      Munich

It's terribly unfair to spend just one day in Munich, but that's what we did, and we'll have to live with it.  After the war, most of the German cities had to chose between rebuilding and starting over.  Fortunately, Munich chose the former.  Many of the photos here are from the Munich Residence in the city center.  Munich is a one-hour train-ride from Salzburg, making it entirely too convenient to make a day-trip.

      Ljubljana (SI)

        Ljubljana

The capital of Slovenia blends its Illyrian past with a very western-looking present.  It's one of Europe's best secrets, for now.

        Zagreb (HR)

          Zagreb

Going from Slovenia to Croatia, the sense of being in the Balkans becomes stronger.  Here, the conflict following the dissolution of Yugoslavia is still fresh in the minds of many.  For those who like hearing from people who participated in history, Zagreb is a place to see.

          Bratislava (SK)

            Bratislava

The capital of Slovakia is often overlooked by those cruising down the Danube on the way to Budapest.  Known for centuries by its German name, Pressburg, Bratislava is an enjoyable day-trip from Vienna.  When the weather is good, the river is the most enjoyable way to get here from Vienna.  We display our photos of the Danube here.

            Budapest (HU)

              Budapest

One of Europe's great cities, Budapest literally combines the older, hilly section, Buda, with newer Pest, located on the east bank of the Danube.  Another European city may look more magical at night, but we have not yet seen it.

              Brno (CZ)

                Brno

A city to be seen from above and below, Brno is the Czech Republic's Second City.  Its most prominent feature is Spilberk Castle, employed for mostly nefarious purposes for centuries.  Below ground Brno has many attractions including the second largest ossuary in Europe.  It's an easy train-ride from Vienna.

                Vienna (AT)

                  Vienna

Providing an overview of Vienna in a paragraph is as futile as visiting the city for a day.  Vienna requires time to be fully appreciated, but it provides bountiful rewards to those who invest such efforts.
